8 March is International Women's Day (IWD), a global day celebrating the social, economic, cultural, and political achievements of women. The day also marks a call to action for accelerating women's equality. This is always a special day at WPI. A time to reaffirm our commitment to fight for equality and to end women's homelessness.

The IWD theme this year is #choosetochallenge.

WPI chooses to challenge women's housing insecurity every day. We do not accept that a secure and safe home for a woman is a privilege, rather than a right. We choose to challenge the inherent, financial disadvantage that women experience due to gender inequality at every age and stage of their lives, which directly impacts their access to secure and affordable housing.

This IWD we are asking for your help.

Will you choose to challenge and make a donation to help vulnerable women and children find secure homes?

The women behind WPI are striking the #choosetochallenge pose. Throughout the month of March, we will be letting you know what we individually challenge in our daily lives to help create permanent change for disadvantaged and vulnerable women.

We can all choose to challenge and call out gender bias and inequality. We can all choose to seek out and celebrate women's achievements. Collectively, we can all help create an inclusive world. From challenge comes change, so let's all #choosetochallenge.

Please consider a donation today to help women who are desperate for a safe and secure place to call home, and to help us continue our essential work.

Creating new beginnings for women

Women’s Property Initiatives creates new beginnings for women and children at risk of homelessness by providing permanent and affordable homes, access to support networks and ongoing advocacy.

We are a not-for-profit, community housing provider founded in 1996 to meet the housing needs of single women and single mothers and their children.

Affordable, appropriate and secure housing is a basic human need and right. It is not being adequately provided by the public or private sectors. WPI seeks to provide permanent homes that change a woman’s future and help to break the inter-generational cycle of poverty. We can envisage a time when no Victorian woman is homeless or at risk of becoming homeless.

WPI believes in housing first. We know that without housing, access to support services, employment, education and productive participation in society are extremely difficult. That’s why we focus on getting women and women led families, into stable homes first, where they can address the other challenges in their lives

  • Launch of the WPI Foundation

An inaugural donation from the Lions Club Melbourne Host has launched the WPI Foundation.

WPI is seeking further philanthropic investment in the WPI Foundation. Capital accumulated in the Foundation will be used to build more affordable housing for disadvantaged women and their families.

The new Foundation is a discrete fund established under WPI’s Gift Fund, which provides Tax Deductibility Status. This enables donations to be claimed as tax deductions under Australian tax rulings.
